Tennant back on stage as Hamlet
Posted: 4 January, 2009 | 4:42 pm in the News category.

Actor David Tennant has returned to the lead role of Hamlet on the London stage after undergoing back surgery.

Tennant, who is quitting Doctor Who, received an ovation along with his fellow actors, the Royal Shakespeare Company said.
But they added his return would be assessed on a “day by day” basis and theatre-goers are advised to check the website for updates.
The 37-year-old’s run at the Novello Theatre is due to finish on 10 January.
Tennant’s understudy Edward Bennett, who played Hamlet during his absence, has resumed his role as Laertes.
Bennett received standing ovations when he initially assumed the lead, but mixed reviews from critics.
Tennant paid tribute at the time, saying it was a “fantastic achievement” getting to grips with the part of Hamlet at short notice.

Sell-out
Tennant had an operation for a slipped disc in December, and said his enforced absence from the play was “hugely disappointing”.
“My back problem has progressed to the point where it is currently impossible for me to carry on without surgery,” he said last month.
He played Hamlet 60 times in Stratford-upon-Avon in the summer ahead of the production’s London transfer.
Tickets for the London shows sold out within three hours when they went on sale in September.
Tennant is due to begin filming scenes for a Doctor Who special later this month.
Matt Smith has been unveiled as the next actor to take on the role, and will be seen on screens from 2010.

The Eleventh Doctor
Posted: 2 January, 2009 | 8:44 pm in the News category.

The BBC confirmed today that it will reveal the identity of the Eleventh Doctor as part of a special edition of Doctor Who Confidential to be aired on BBC ONE tomorrow, Saturday 03 January at 17:35hrs.

Following the announcement in October that David Tennant would be stepping down from his role as the Doctor at the end of 2009, speculation has been mounting as to who would take over from him for the fifth series of this iconic BBC drama that will air in 2010.

With a new creative team in place for the new series led by Executive Producers Steven Moffat and Piers Wenger, the casting of the new Doctor was job number one to be completed before scripts could be finalised and shooting could begin in summer 2009.

In the Doctor Who special, to be aired tomorrow at 17.35hrs, the actor playing the new Doctor will be giving his or her initial reaction to being the new, eleventh incarnation of one of television’s most loved characters.

Head Of Drama BBC Wales Piers Wenger said, “We are so pleased to have been able to cast this person as the new Doctor. We believe the actor is going to bring something very special to the role and will make it absolutely their own - I just can’t wait to tell everyone who it is - it has been a nail biting Christmas trying to keep this under wraps!”.

Whilst this is not directly related to David, there has been a lot of speculation about his predecessor on Doctor Who.  I look forward to finding out who this is, and will post more about this after the episode has aired!

Doctor in demand: David Tennant now the biggest stage draw in Britain
Posted: 31 December, 2008 | 3:25 pm in the News category.

He has already enthralled millions of TV viewers playing the Time Lord in Doctor Who.  And now it seems David Tennant is extending his power over a new audience - theatregoers.

The 37-year-old actor has been named as one of the most influential people in showbusiness by entertainment newspaper, The Stage.

He is only the fifth actor ever to make the top 20 - after Dame Judi Dench, Dame Maggie Smith, Nigel Havers and Simon Russell Beale - in a list normally dominated by theatre directors and producers.

Alistair Smith, The Stage’s news and opinion editor, said Tennant has such an influence that any production starring him is guaranteed to sell out within hours.

This year the actor has starred in just two productions, Love’s Labour’s Lost and the title role in Hamlet, both with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Runs in Stratford-upon-Avon and the West End sold out within hours, with many of the £40 tickets going on to make more than £500 on internet auction sites and the black market.

Mr Smith said Tennant’s pulling power was so potent he could ‘read the phonebook and people would still buy tickets’.

‘David Tennant makes the top 20 of The Stage 100 this year because he has been the biggest box office draw of the year,’ he added.

‘In fact, he has been the biggest box office draw in recent memory. He has been one of the most influential figures because he was the reason a lot of people bought tickets to see Hamlet in the first place.

‘It’s quite rare for us to list actors in the top 20, but when we do it is because they are performers who have a huge box office draw, no matter what production they are in.’

Topping the list was producer Cameron Mackintosh, who has helped create several hit shows including Mary Poppins and My Fair Lady.

Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber - who has won the top spot six times - came second, while Kevin Spacey, the Hollywood actor and artistic director of the Old Vic Theatre, came 11th.

Tennant is currently recovering from a slipped disc and has been unable to appear on stage since Hamlet transferred to London at the start of the month. Doctors have said he will not return until the New Year at the earliest.

I apologise for the lack of  updates over this festive period…  I have been very busy enjoying it with two families (my own, and my husband), that I’ve not had time to even turn the computer on until today!  I also have to transfer all my files over from the main computer to the shiny new laptop that arrived on Xmas Eve, which appears to be quite a slow process.  I expect updates to resume on Sunday or Monday! :)

David is appears to be recovering well from recent surgery, and has been spotted out and about.  He has, however, been confirmed as absent from Hamlet until at least 3rd January, in order to recover properly.  Russell T Davies has confirmed that filming on the Doctor Who specials will commence on 19th January 2009, with David expecting to start then too.

I have added screencaptures to the Gallery from David’s pre-recorded piece on ‘The One Show’ this week.  I hope to add the video the archive asap.

Tennant out of Hamlet for surgery
Posted: 10 December, 2008 | 8:36 pm in the News category.

Actor David Tennant will not be returning to play Hamlet “before Christmas” because of a back injury, the Royal Shakespeare Company says.

The 37-year-old, who is scheduled to have an operation for a slipped disc on Thursday, said his enforced absence was “hugely disappointing”.
His understudy Edward Bennett, who received standing ovations on Monday and Tuesday, will continue to stand in.
Tennant’s run as Hamlet at the Novello Theatre is due to finish on 10 January.
He played Hamlet 60 times in Stratford-upon-Avon in the summer ahead of the production’s London transfer.
“My back problem has progressed to the point where it is currently impossible for me to carry on without surgery,” Tennant said in a statement.
“I want to get back onstage as quickly as possible and I am very grateful to Ed who has courageously got to grips with the role but in a much shorter time. It’s a fantastic achievement.”
Artistic Director Michael Boyd said: “We all wish David a speedy recovery and it is an indication of the RSC’s investment in understudies that Ed Bennett can take over Shakespeare’s largest role at such short notice.”
The RSC said refunds would not be issued “because the company has a fully rehearsed understudy policy”.
“The company is able to offer exchanges, subject to availability, for other RSC London performances during this season at the Novello Theatre,” it added in a statement.

‘Traditional reading’
Bennett, who normally plays the role of Laertes, received mixed reviews after Tuesday’s press night performance.
The Guardian’s Michael Billington said the actor’s Hamlet was a “more robustly traditional reading of the part which marks Bennett down as an actor to watch”.
But Charles Spencer from the Telegraph said: “For sheer nerve and self-confidence, Bennett undoubtedly deserved the cheers. It has to be said, however, that he is not a natural Hamlet.”
Tickets for the London shows sold out within three hours when they went on sale in September.
